January's Royal Ashton Times

Royal Ashton Hotel is a home of our time. It provides warmth comfort and support when those around you are unable to help.
Hard Times by Charles Dickens was a campaign against peoples lives being reduced to material facts and statistics. Dickens wanted to destroy the assumption that prosperity ran parallel with morality.

Times are still hard 150 years later and we still need to try to be sympathetic to why things have gone wrong in peoples lives. Below are a few case studies of how our sympathetic approach has helped our clients. It's not just the young that find themselves alone, homeless and without support. We support and help everyone through their difficulties to a point where they can stand on their own two feet. Our clients end up feeling of value and contributing to the society. A small investment of less than £700 in each person at the Royal Ashton has turned both lives around.

Mr R - It’s not nice when a marriage breaks up for anyone, even more so when you are a 65 years old man and your wife has put you out on the streets. Mr R had been married for over 40 years and all his life he had passed his wage packet over to his wife so she would pay the bills, the rent, the food and clothing.

So when he he found himself all alone and on the street he was at a loss. He was moved into the Royal Ashton and we helped him claim his pension, set up a bank account and pay his bills. All of this put a great strain on him and his self respect as well as his health.

At times he got very low and tried to return to his wife but things went wrong again and he returned to us. We helped him manage his time, showed him how to cook, do his laundry and at times remind him about his personal hygiene.

After a while he was offered at flat of his own but he worried about looking after himself. He needed his self confidence back to enable him to pay his bills and organise his life.

We helped him sort out all the small things like getting connected to the utilities. We got the right people involved and his health improved. He is now well and self sufficient. Mr R pops in from time to time for a chat or some advice, but he is happy and confident to manage on his own.

Mr P was placed at the Royal Ashton by the Local Council Authority as he was not just homeless, but a 40 year old that for years was dependant on drugs and alcohol.

Due to our policy of no drugs and alcohol on the premises and the support we offered, Mr P made a start in making changes to his lifestyle. He went through periods of 'cold-turkey' and even relapsed from time to time but was supported all the way.

We helped him by putting in place outside agencies such as AA, Novas, and Turning Point. Our support was being there for him, 24/7, when things got hard.
When he needed someone, we would sit and listen to him. We would give encouragement and praise when due, not judgmental when he had a few cans of beer or a few days on an illegal substance, but constantly taking him back to his goals.

We would remind him of his appointments, Doctors, AA, Novas, even his dentist appointments to try to get him to have a sense of what a normal life felt like.
Mr P has been with us since July 2010. He has worked hard to get to where he is today; confident and self sufficient. All this has been helped by the strong support of the staff at The Royal Ashton.

Mr P will be ready to start his life on his own sometime after Christmas. If and when He needs us, we will be there at the end of the phone or he can pop in, anytime, and see us.
